I Am Here For You Anytime

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination
and life to everything.”

– Plato

Music. One word. A hundred and one emotions.

Music. Songs. Words decked in shards of rhythm gliding down the black cascade of her luscious hair…the beat dexterously delineated on the lining of her red nine yards drape.

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”

– Victor Hugo

Music.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘music’?

Best friend. Loneliness. Distraction. Trance. Connection with God. Escape from reality. Bon Jovi. Dance.

A 19 year old Roon voiced, “Poetry. Definitely poetry. You see, poetry is a combination of love, distress, construction and humanity… it speaks of love… which music represents on rhythm…”

On the other hand, Rahul, slightly dazed, simply said, “Life. There is music in every part of my life… I have a tune in my head all the time. Plus, I have been doing music, practicing, learning and performing since I was five. So, it has kind of built itself into my life. “

As for me, it is a song… a simple song… but it means so much more… ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles… there is this magical thing about this song to which I automatically connect… it is almost inexplicable…

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.”

– Bob Marley

The songs that move us…the songs that you listen to on a cold winter night with a cup of coffee in one hand and…you have peace… right there… wrapped in a blue parcel… the songs that make you or break you..the songs that lift your spirits… the songs that make you want to scream out loud… the songs that allure you to your senses… the songs that relieve you… the songs that change you… most importantly, the songs that you can fall back on.. anytime… anywhere…

“People haven’t always been there for me but music always has.”

– Taylor Swift

Songs tug at your heartstrings…push and pull you… throw you into situations that you never thought of…swallow you up and spit you out…the power of music..it is sublime…and these are some songs that embody that raw power to me..

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is a song primarily written by John Lennon for The Beatles’ album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. John Lennon’s son, Julian, is said to have inspired the song with a nursery school drawing he called “Lucy- in the sky with diamonds”. The subtlety of the lyrics transports you to a whole different world… “the girl with the kaleidoscope eyes” refers to perceiving the world as a million reflections of yourself.

Hey Jude is another song by The Beatles, written by Paul McCartney. It evolved from “Hey Jules”, a song written by McCartney to comfort John Lennon’s son, Julian, during his parents’ divorce. This is a song one simply cannot help sing along to. It is such a feel-good song. No matter how depressed…how down you are, it is sure to make a smile crawl onto your lips.

It’s My Life is a song by Bon Jovi. It throws you off the edge a bit.

” It’s my life

It’s now or never

I ain’t gonna live forever

I just want to live while I’m alive”

Life is what you make it. You cannot just give up. You have to be in control.  This song motivates you to rise up. Rise up and take hold of YOUR life. You live only once. Make the most of it.

I Don’t Want To Be by Gavin DeGraw is a song about being true to yourself. DeGraw was a prison guard’s son and the depth in his voice, the lyrics- I’m surrounded by liars everywhere I turn/ I’m surrounded by imposters everywhere I turn” clearly reveal his harsh experiences in life. You don’t have to be or act like someone else. After all, the best that you can be is you. Be your individual self. Stand out. All in all, a great song.

Tangled Up In Blue by Bob Dylan is a class by itself. It paints a beautiful picture on silence. It IS poetry – the interweaving of his and her life as it falls apart and rekindles back over time.

Won’t go Home Without You is a song by Maroon5 from their album ‘It Won’t Be Soon Before Long’. Adam Levine etches so much emotion into this song that it just comes out as plain honest. Sometimes, all things that we should have said cannot be put into words…and hence, remains unspoken. It becomes too late.

Demons is a song by American rock band Imagine Dragons. It is a well written song with a deep meaning. Everyone has a “shadow”, their darker side which they don’t want the world to see…especially not their loved ones…because you don’t want to taint the relationship. This is evident from the lines-

 “Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide”

The song makes you look deep into your soul and realize your “demons”.

Fireflies by Owl City is a feel-good song. It just cheers you up. Life is short and time is precious.

“Cause I’d get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance”

The song simply lifts up your spirits. The music, the catchy rhythm, the innocent words –all beautifully creates a happy bubble.

Music. Songs. They speak for themselves. They are magical.

“The only truth is music.”

– Jack Kerouac
