Radio Jockeying- No more an offbeat career

You like to talk? Can you simply blabber? If your answer is yes, then radio jockey is your cup of tea.

It is not a coming up profession, because it is already well known and many people’s dream is to be an RJ or radio jockey. Radio jockeys existed since a very long time but due to the rise in number of Radio stations, the term became popular. It’s a sway now.

What’s it about

No matter what-RJ’s always have to be happy. He should know his city and culture well; he should keep himself updated with the latest events happening in town. He should be able to write scripts and manipulate them, anchor live shows. But the most important of all- speaking should come naturally to him and the fun will never end.

How does one get there?

There is no specific academic path to become an RJ but graduation is mandatory. A diploma or a post graduation degree in mass communication can be an add-on. Also, several courses are available which can help you pick up the skills, get better understanding of the profession and its technicalities. Qualifications may be useful but skills and passion count for more in this profession.

Pay off

At the entry level, a radio jockey can earn around Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 16,000. RJs with one or two years of experience can earn between Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 45,000. If one moves up to the management level, the salary can be anywhere between Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 95,000 per month and even more. The pay increases according to your job profile and experience. Senior RJs make around Rs. 1.5 lakhs to Rs. 2 lakhs a month. However, if an RJ is able to create a niche and succeeds in popularizing his style, the remuneration has no limit.

  • One should be well versed with movies and songs
  • A radio jockey does not have a fixed working hour, he might be called anytime
  • There are various types of radio jockeys like:
  1. Fm/am radio jockeys
  2. Talk radio jockeys
  3. Sports talk radio jockeys
  4. Satellite radio jockeys

 

So if you are interested in being an RJ, being popular, easy going, exploring, talkative, always smiling then this is your field!
