I am too Scared to step out of my house

I am a girl who lives in Delhi, the capital of our country. There are times, when my parents would call me every five minutes just to check if I am safe, when a friend of mine accompanies to my society gate. I think twice before stepping outside my home after 7 in the evening.  Why is that?

Switch on your television, everywhere it is the same thing- a girl got gang raped, sexual harassment on a working ladies, female foeticide, a girl burned for dowry. I feel disgraceful, hurt, and even threatened that these people had committed these heinous acts. A 23 year old paramedical student got raped by six lewd persons. Her whole life, dreams shattered in a blink of an eye. What was her fault? That she was a girl?

Take a bigger scenario-the whole nation. Is it really safe for every girl out there? Madhya Pradesh has been reported to have maximum rape cases. Around 17% of women are sexually harassed in the offices in some form. Rajasthan have maximum cases of female foeticide.

We call our self a developing nation with technology surpassing imagination every minute. we are moving towards higher pitch in everything whether it is sports, education but still our sex ratio is alarming 1000:940. In small number they are just 60 more males than females, but just imagine that in population of India. When will this country be safe for girls? Every election we hear several promises. Politicians discuss these things calling it as their agenda but where is the result? Why there is no strict rule against all the mishaps that happens to women?

Girls are blamed for provoking men by wearing short length clothes. Oh yes, they would tell us what to wear, when to roam the streets and when not to. But they can’t have a strong law against those accused persons, nor can they protect us.

We call us humans; still these inhumane acts are done by humans only. Obviously we can’t change people who act like an animal. What we can do is -to see they get what they deserve, to help others, spread awareness (like in Delhi anti-stalking helpline is 011-27894455), and support the new motion.

With the similar motives and aims there are several NGO’s who are working for this belief (like Swabhiman- a smile initiative). Their objective is to enable women to realize their full potential in every sphere. By this she would be able to lead her life in her own way, would be no less than anyone, and would learn to fight for her rights. With every year ending, an era ends but a new begins. Let this beginning be a new kick start to-Fight for the rights.
