Well, those of you who have been to Odisha, it won’t be too difficult to guess but for those of you who have not been to the city of temples, Google once at least!

Sudarshan Pattnaik is the name of the persona who gave new dimensions and great recognition to a completely different form of art of carving images out of sand known as SAND ART.

Until then sand was just another form of soil which found its use in construction and filling. It was only when Mr. Pattnaik through is extremely jubilant creativity turned sand into a piece worthy of admiration world-wide.

 Sudarshan Pattnaik (Oriya; born on 15 April 1977) was born in Puri nearly 60 km from Bhubaneswar the capital city of Odisha. He is the inventor of the very famous – sand art He started sculpting images on sand since the age of seven and has designed hundreds of sand sculpture. In the recent years people have started focusing on this art form. He has won many national and international awards for his creative designs and has recorded his name in the World records.

Sudarshan Pattnaik’s ultimate objective is to create awareness and enthusiasm among the people and make it popular professional art form among the people for which he is traveling various places in the country and demonstrating this art form by holding workshops and training. He established “The Golden Sand Art Institute which is first of its nature in India.

Pattnaik has so far participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture championships across the world and won many awards for the country. In June 2012, he has won first prize in International Sand Sculpture Championship.


His sand sculpture on Black Taj Mahal earned him accolades all over the world.


Sand art in Odisha is one of the famous art forms of the state. Sand Art is a distinctive type of art form of Puri in Odisha, which is usually depicted at the seashore. This form of art is unique to the state. It is actually a type of sculpture, which is practiced on sand. It can be compared with stone sculpture. To carve a sand sculpture, the raw material is the only clean and fine grained sand mixed with water. With the help of this type of sand and with the blessings of God and by the magic of fingers, an artist can carve a beautiful and attractive sculpture on the beach.
